The Mekong River is among the biggest rivers in the World, starting its nearly 5,000km course from the Tibetan Plateau traveling its way through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The Mekong River discharges its water into the East Vietnam Sea in southern Vietnam via its nine major tributaries. The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is the vast region of low-lying land stretching from south-west of Ho Chi Minh City to the cape of Ca Mau and the beach of Ha Tien in Rach Gia Gulf. The Mekong Delta area includes the provinces of Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, An Giang, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau. The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam has a tropical climate with 2 seasons a year: the rainy season from May to November and the dry season from December to April. In the dry season, there may be winter monsoon bringing the chill from the North and Central Region of Vietnam to the area, which makes the air pleasant.
The Mekong Delta is inhabited by mostly the Kinh People and the Khmer People. There are small Hoa communities (Chinese) and Cham communities in the area, also. This helps to shape up the colorful culture of the region.
Due to the crisscrossing systems of rivers, canals and creeks, daily activities and transportation in the region are mostly by waterways. Because of this, the life style in the Mekong Delta has always been as exotic as ever before.
The economy in the Mekong Delta has always been related to agriculture, horticulture and aquaculture and recently to tourism. The Mekong Delta accounts for major amount of rice production in Vietnam, provides huge and variety number of seasonal fruits in the country and produces most amount of fish, shrimp and seafood exports of Vietnam.

Due to lack of good tourist infrastructure, most of those who make their trips here are adventure travellers.
